Troubleshooting DMARC Setup and Compliance Issues

Troubleshoot and resolve DMARC setup and compliance issues with our step-by-step guide.

Ensuring a successful DMARC implementation is crucial for protecting your domain against email threats such as phishing, spoofing, and email fraud. If you're experiencing issues with DMARC setup or compliance, follow this troubleshooting guide to resolve common problems and ensure a secure email environment.

Step 1: Verify DNS Record Configuration

Ensure that your DMARC record is correctly published in your DNS. You can use the DMARC Record Checker tool on Your DMARC to verify the record.

  • Confirm the DMARC TXT record is added to _dmarc.yourdomain.com
  • Verify the record structure follows the format:

v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:your@email.com; ruf=mailto:your@email.com

  • Check for any typos or missing parameters

Step 2: Ensure SPF and DKIM Alignment

For DMARC compliance, both SPF and DKIM must align properly:

  • SPF Record Check: Verify your SPF record using the SPF Record Checker to ensure authorized sending sources are listed and the record does not exceed the 10 DNS lookup limit
  • DKIM Record Check: Use the DKIM Record Checker to confirm the correct public key is published and matches the private key used in outgoing emails

Step 3: Check for Alignment Failures

DMARC alignment ensures the 'From' domain matches the domain used in SPF and DKIM checks. Use the DMARC Lookup Tool to inspect:

  • Strict vs. Relaxed Alignment:

    • Relaxed (r) allows partial matching
    • Strict (s) requires exact matching
  • Correct Use of Identifiers: Verify that SPF and DKIM identifiers match the domain in the From header

Step 4: Inspect DMARC Reports

Use Your DMARC's Smart DMARC Reporting to analyze failure reports and identify sources causing non-compliance:

  • Monitor DMARC reports for unauthorized sending sources
  • Review common failure reasons such as missing DNS records, misconfigured DKIM keys, or unlisted sending services

Step 5: Address Email Deliverability Issues

If legitimate emails are being rejected or flagged as spam:

  • Switch your DMARC policy to p=none for monitoring mode
  • Gradually enforce stricter policies (p=quarantine and then p=reject) once misconfigurations are resolved
  • Check your BIMI record with the BIMI Record Checker to ensure proper brand logo display

Step 6: Update and Maintain Compliance

Maintaining DMARC compliance involves regular checks and updates:

  • Review DMARC policies quarterly
  • Keep DNS records updated when changing email service providers
  • Subscribe to Your DMARC's Notification Service for updates and new security resources
